Gần mười năm lãng đãng giữa sinh tử. Hơn hai mươi năm, Cổ Long chết rồi, nhưng tác phẩm ông để lại không chết. Từ niên đại 80 đến những năm 2000, thị trường sách đại lục Trung Quốc đã tiêu thụ một khối lượng khỗng lồ các tiểu thuyết võ hiệp của Cổ Long khó thống kê nổi. Và tại ngay Việt nam cũng vậy.

Năm 1936, Cổ Long ra đời tại Hồng Kông, lúc 12 tuổi đã vùi đầu viết tiểu thuyết rồi. Năm 13 tuổi, ông theo cha mẹ sang định cư tại Đài Loan, không lâu sau là cha mẹ ly dị, gia đình tan vỡ. Ông bắt đầu cuộc sống như ác mộng, làm thuê làm mướn khắp nơi, ăn đói mặc thiếu, khốn khó cùng cực. Tại Hồng Kông, vào năm 1954 Lương Vũ Sinh bắt đầu viết “Long hỗ đấu kinh hoa” đăng tải nhiều kỳ cho “Tân văn báo”, năm 1955, “Thư kiếm ân cừu lục” của Kim Dung cũng thử tiếng gáy đầu. Cổ Long khi đó mới chỉ là một cậu bé tập tọng văn học, tác phẩm đầu tiên của ông chính thức có nhuận bút là một tiểu phẩm văn học viết năm 1956.
